Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 1190
JE162-1190r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1190 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €260 (about US$360 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, ZWOLLE, Stad, AR rijksdaalder, 1659. Met titel van Ferdinand III. Vz/ Geharnast bb. r. met zwaard en stadswapen. Kz/ Gekroond leeuwenschild. Zeldzaam. (Netherlands, city of Zwolle, silver rijksdaalder of 1659, struck in the name of Ferdinand III. Obverse: armored bust right with sword and city arms; reverse: crowned lion shield. Rare, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1650, 1654-56 and 1659, with the 1655 being the most common date. A double rijksdaalder (Dav-A4994) is known for 1650. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.03 g, 0.885 fine silver, 42 mm diameter, this specimen 28,74 g.
