Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1206
SB924-1206r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1206 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €12,600 (about US$13,963 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Evenly Handled and Very Rare 1/8 Speciedaler, One of Only Two Known in Private Hands, NORWAY. 1/8 Speciedaler, 1660. Christiania Mint. Frederik III. NGC EF-45. Mintmaster: Frederik Grüner (FG). Engraver: Johan Blum. One of only two known in private hands, this example certainly does not lack for rarity. The weight is consistent with a 1/8 Speciedaler, and was likely produced as such instead of being an off-metal striking of a Ducat. The surfaces are light gray with moderate and mostly even wear on the devices and traces of brilliance within the protected areas of the designs. A type that is not short on beauty, and one that should not be short on suitors. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: Alfred Benzon Collection (Copenhagen - 5/1887) Lot # 1172."

This rare type was struck 1660 only along with a triple, double, single and half specie daler. Numista states that there are two known of this issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.60 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 3.53 g.
