The first specimen was lot 31644 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "James VI 60 Shilling Crown ND (1603-25) VF35 NGC. Thistle mm. A pleasingly round specimen of good metal quality; the strike is shallow as is common for this issue, but otherwise clear and complete with little actual wear to the designs. Indeed, this example is far above average for the type, original surfaces bearing a medium dark tone which gives way to light gold when rotated against the light. Visually appealing, well-made and a great collector's piece." The second specimen was lot 23659 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[2] noted, "SCOTLAND. 60 Shillings, ND (1604-09). James II. NGC VG-8. Thistle mintmark. Toned, even wear, but intact and problem free." The coinage of Scotland prior to unification with England is confusing. Bullion was scarce, so issues were small and sporadic. Pence and shillings were used but were not worth their English equivalents. This crown comes with the English arms in the first quarter (shown here) or with the Scottish arms in the first quarter.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
