This specimen is a very scarce date of a series struck 1869-97 at the Guanajuato mint. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. This specimen was lot 8942 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, “MEXICO. Guanajuato. 10 Centavos, 1877-GoS. Very rare in this grade. NGC AU-55."

Specification: 2.71 g, 0.903 fine silver, .078 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Catalog reference: KM 403.5.
