This specimen was lot 1139 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$11,132 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SAINT EMPIRE, SALZBOURG, Archevêché, Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein (1687-1709), AV 6 ducats, 1687. Frappé avec les coins du demi-Taler. D/ Armoiries. R/ Les saints patrons de Salzbourg assis de f. derrière une maquette d'église. Très rare Avec la valeur 6 gravée dans le champ. Brillant de frappe. Superbe. (archbishoric of Salzburg, John Ernest of Thun and Hohenstein, 1687-1709, gold six ducats of 1687, struck with half-thaler dies. Obverse: arms; reverse: the patron saints of Salzburg sit facing, a model of the cathedral at their feet. Very rare with the value "6" graffitied in the field. Mint luster, Extremely Fine.)"
This is one of a series of multiple ducats which included four ducats (KM 258), five ducats (KM 259), six ducats (shown here), 7 ducats (KM 261), 8 ducats (KM 262), ten ducats (KM 263), twelve ducats (KM 264), fifteen ducats (KM 265), twenty ducats (KM 266), and a monstrous fifty ducats (KM 267).
