(archbishopric of Salzburg, John Ernest of Thun and Hohenstein, 1687-1709, fifteen kreuzers of 1687-92. Five pieces, very fine to extremely fine.)
(Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein was the second of his family to govern the archbishopric in the 17th century; his stepbrother Guidobald had been archbishop 1654-1668. Like him, he was a great patron of the arts. He summoned the famous master builder Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach to Salzburg. Johann Ernst had him build the Felsenreitschule - today a venue for the annual Salzburg Festival. He had the horse tamers set up in front of the pond and the statues of the apostles set up in front of the cathedral. Johann Ernst was personally very wealthy due to large holdings in the East India Company and also improved the finances of the archbishopric through prudent economic and financial policies. He promoted various schools and theological institutions and was therefore also nicknamed "the founder". A passionate hunter (another nickname was "the hunting bishop"), he pursued poachers with extreme severity. As early as 1695, Johann Ernst suffered from an eye condition and therefore had his favorite Franz Anton von Harrach elected his coadjutor in 1705. Despite this, he kept the affairs of state firmly in his hands until his death in 1709.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck in 1687-92. Fifteen kreuzer made one quarter gulden. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 7.28 g.
