Künker sale 384, lot 2933

This specimen was lot 2933 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €340 (about US$439 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Max Gandolph von Küenburg, 1668-1687. Reichstaler 1686. Hübsche Patina, min. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Max Gandolph of Küenburg, 1668-87, thaler of 1686. Handsome patina, minor planchet defects, extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1668-77, 1680, 1685-86 and is common. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
