This type was struck in Salzburg 1681-86 during the rule of Archbishop Max Gandolf (1668-87). It probably traded for 1/8 thaler. This coin was minted using roller dies, a technology which competed with the screw press in the seventeenth century and eventually went out of use because coins made with them were rarely flat. The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 230.
