Sincona sale 38, lot 1878

This specimen was lot 1878 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$840 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Salzburg, Erzbistum, Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709 Doppeldukat 1688. Sehr schön. Fassungsspuren. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, John Ernest of Thun and Hohenstein, 1687-1709, double ducat of 1688. Very fine. Mounted.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type is listed for 1688 only and is rare, but slightly more available than the klippe issued the same year (KM 272). In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6.36 g.

Catalog reference: Zöttl 2110. Probszt 1755. Fr-831, KM 271.
