This specimen was lot 70693 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. 12 Mariengroschen (1/3 Taler), 1739 IBH. Karl I. NGC AU-58. A seldom see[n[ at auction "Wildman" issue with cobalt and iridescent toning. Almost never encountered in such a high state of preservation, this should be considered RARE as a result." On the death of Ferdinand Albrecht in 1735, the Dannenburg line of dukes died out, to be succeeded by Karl I of Brunswick-Bevern. This type was struck for him 1735-80. All of the twelve mariengroschen struck by this duke used the "wild man" design; the "leaping stallion" only appeared on one-third thalers (= half gulden) starting in 1764.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: KM-867.
