Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1739-C 6 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74634 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen, 1739-C. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-58. On the cusp of Mint State status, this alluring minor dazzles with a great wildman depiction as well as some rather enchanting color highlighting each side. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This denomination was one quarter gulden or one sixth of a thaler. This type was struck 1735-80 and is common. This is the only date with mintmaster "C". The concurrent "leaping stallion" coin of the same weight was a one-sixth thaler.
