This specimen was lot 22331 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 2-1/2 Pesos 1893 Cn-M, AU. Full mint brilliance, with a sharp strike and light hairlines on the reflective surfaces. The only issue of this denomination for the Culiacan mint, with a tiny mintage of only 141 pieces. One of the many very rare issues of the 2-1/2 Peso series." The type is recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. The series, never popular, ended in 1893.
