Mexico 1849-GC MP 2 reales

Stephen Album sale 43, lot 1539

This specimen was lot 1539 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $480. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO: Republic, AR 2 reales, 1849-GC, assayer MP, NGC graded XF40. In 1844, a government mint was erected at Guadalupe y Calvo to strike coinage from the locally discovered Rosario vein. The mint was closed in 1850." Shown is an 1848GC-MP two reales, one of a type struck 1844-51. Assayer MP is the sole assayer recorded for the Guadalupe y Calvo mint. Other mints include Guanajuato, Guadalajara, Alamos, Hermosillo, Zacatecas, Culiacan, Chihuahua, Durango, Potosi, Estado de Mexico, Real de Catorce and Mexico City. Only Oaxaca did not strike this type. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated. The 1861MoCH is the only date of two reales that is reasonably common in high grade, the result of the dispersal of a hoard.
