from Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 776

This specimen was lot 776 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €130 (about US$165 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux huit L, 1690&, Aix. 1er type. 1e réformation. D/ B. dr. à d. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnés de quatre lis. presque Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver écu of the eight "L's" of 1690, Aix mint, first type, first reformation. Obverse: draped bust to right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's" with four fleurs-de-lys in the fields. About Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1690-93 and is the first reasonably common type after the scarce dates of the 1670's and 1680's. Gadoury notes this mint as common.

Recorded mintage: 94,750 on new blanks plus an unknown but large number struck over previous types.

Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, lettered edge; this specimen is 26,88 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 508, Dr/2 no. 396, Dav-3811, Dupl. 1514A; Gad-216.
