This specimen was lot 2620 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Ecu, 1704-D (Lyons) NGC MS63. Louis XIV. Bust right. Reverse: Crowned four double L's with fleur-de-lys between. Over struck on earlier type. A lovely mint state example, boldly struck on a large flan with full original brilliant mint fresh luster. NGC graded MS-63." The type was struck at the Lyon mint until 1709; there are also ¼ and ½ écus struck during this period with this design. Lyon also used the older écu aux palmes obverse (with an uninterrupted obverse legend) for 1704. The type was issued 1704-09 and is common tho less so than the écu aux trois couronnes.
Recorded mintage: 27,017 fn (new blanks) plus 922,103 rf (restruck over older coins).
Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, edge lettered "DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM", designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
