Zwolle 1648 daalder Dav-4885
This specimen was lot 1375 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS (United), Zwolle, "lion" daalder, 1648. AXF with bold lion and nearly full legends including 100% complete date, darkly rainbow toned, with one old dent in field on each side." Lion daalders were struck in most of the provinces that today make up the Netherlands. Zwolle is a town in the province of Overijssel. The municipal mints were the target of frequent denunciations from the States General regarding the light weight and bad alloy of their product. After much wrangling, they were all closed by the start of the eighteenth century. This type is recorded in the SCWC for Zwolle for 1641-55.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 27.05 grams.
