Gelderland 1648 daalder Dav-4850
This specimen was lot 30767 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $293.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Gelderland. Lion Daalder (48 Stuivers), 1648. NGC AU-55." "Lion" daalders were struck in Gelderland and other Dutch provinces until 1697 but are seldom seen in collectible condition. Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (48 stuivers) was the "prince's" daalder (40 stuivers), the silver ducat (also 48 stuivers), the three gulden (60 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary. Dav-4849 has the knight facing right while the very similar Dav-4850, shown here, has the knight facing left.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver.
Catalog reference: Dav-4850; KM-36; Delm-869.
