Gelderland 1646 1/2 daalder
This specimen was lot 72653 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $95. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Gelderland. 1/2 Lion Daalder (Leeuwendaalder), 1646. NGC AU Details--Reverse Cleaned. A fairly SCARCE type, this example exhibits some cleaning marks resulting in the details designation. Lightly toned, with a typical strike for issue." "Lion" daalders were struck in Gelderland and other Dutch provinces until 1697 but are seldom seen in collectible condition. Simultaneous with the Lion daalder (48 stuivers) was the "prince" daalder (40 stuivers), the silver ducat (also 48 stuivers), the three gulden (60 stuivers) and the ducaton (silver rider). The catalog does not explain why so many different large silver coins were felt to be necessary. This type was struck with various mintmarks 1606-53 with this subtype with the lily mintmark appearing 1646 only. It has a low catalog value as nearly all specimens are so wretchedly made as to be uncollectible.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
