Zeeland 1648 daalder Dav-4872
This specimen was lot 2048 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €130 (about US$180 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, ZEELAND, AR leeuwendaalder, 1648. Vz/ Ridder rechtsom kijkend met voor zich een wapen met een klimmende leeuw. Kz/ Klimmende leeuw l. Defekten in de muntplaat op vz. (Netherlands, province of Zeeland, silver lion dollar of 1648. Obverse: standing knight supports the provincial arms; reverse: lion rampant left. Obverse planchet defect, good Very Fine.)"
Lion daalders were struck in most of the provinces that today make up the Netherlands. This type is recorded in the SCWC for Zeeland for 1606-1658. This type overlaps the Nederlandse rijksdaalder of 1606-58, the silver ducat of 1659-68 and the ducaton of 1660-73, all struck to different standards.
