Zwolle 1649 daalder Dav-4885
This specimen was lot 1786 in Jean Elsen sale 116 (Brussels, March 2013), where it sold for 110 euro (about US$167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEDERLAND, ZWOLLE, Stad, AR leeuwendaalder, 1649, Droit: Ridder staand l-nue radié kijkend, met voor zich een wapen waarop St. Michaël met stadswapen. Revers: Klimmende leeuw l. Zeer Fraai" (Netherlands, city of Zwolle, silver lion dollar of 1649; Obverse: knight holds arms of Holland; reverse: lion rampant to left. very fine)"
This type, listed for 1641-55, is not listed as expensive but usually comes in poor condition as most were badly struck. Zwolle is a town in the province of Overijssel. The States General spent most of the seventeenth century attempting to suppress the municipal mints, denouncing their product as under weight and low fineness.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 27,06 g.
