This specimen was lot 34099 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands: Zwolle. City gold gold Ducat 1649 MS63 NGC, With the name and titles of Ferdinand III. Some softness in the obverse legends, yet with a thoroughly lovely reverse and abundant luminosity on both sides. Not often seen in this advanced Choice Mint State and likely pique the interest of quality-conscious bidders." Zwolle is a town in the province of Overijssel. This ducat was struck in the name of emperor Ferdinand II (r. 1619-37) for 1633-76. The States General spent most of the seventeenth century trying to close the municipal mints for fraud and lightweight coinage, and Zwolle was often cited as the worst offender.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.48 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-213, KM 34, Delm-1133.
