Zwolle 1602 2 stuivers
This specimen was lot 285 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €140 (about US$198 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ZWOLLE. Dubbele stuiver, 1602, Silver Sint Michael met stadswapen. Kz. rijksappel, waarop waarde 24, het kruis tussen jaartal en met titel RVDOL. II..Nabootsing van de groschen van 1/24 rijksdaalder van Hildesheim. Zeldzamer jaar. Zeer fraai. (city of Zwolle, silver double stuiver of 1602. Obverse: St. Michael with city arms; reverse: orb with value, the cross dividing the date. An imitation of the groschen or 1/24 thaler of Hildesheim. Scarce date, very fine.)"
This obscure type was struck 1601-02. Altho emperor Rudolf II is cited on the coin, Zwolle was part of the Netherlands, which by the end of the sixteenth century had secured de facto independence from Spain and the empire.
