Zurich 1761 thaler Dav-1791
This specimen was lot 1605 in Jean Elsen sale 109 (Brussels, June 2011) where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SUISSE, ZURICH, Ville, AR Taler, 1761, Droit: Lion debout à gauche, tenant une épée et l'écu de la ville. Revers: Vue de la ville. Ref.: Brisure du coin au revers, habituelle pour cette date. Très Beau à Superbe," (Zurich 1761 thaler, obverse: lion facing left, brandishing a sword and holding the arms of the city; reverse: city view. Die crack on reverse, as is normal for this date, very fine to extremely fine).
This type was struck in Zurich 1745-61 and was one of a series of thalers struck throughout the eighteenth century called "city view" thalers. The obverse legend, "MONETA REIPUBLICAE TIGURINAE," means "coin of the Republic of Zurich."
