Sincona sale 4, lot 5665

This specimen was lot 5665 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$2,128 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Zürich Stadt Taler 1730. Nach links schreitender Löwe mit Schwert und Stadtwappen. Rv. Stadtansicht vom See her. Fast FDC. (Switzerland, city of Zürich, thaler of 1730. Obverse: lion rampant to left holding shield and orb; reverse: city view. Choice uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1729-32 when "city view" thalers were becoming old-fashioned. Similar city view thalers appeared as late as 1761.
