Künker Auction 440, lot 3557

This specimen was lot 3557 in Künker sale 440 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €240 (about US$330 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH Friedrich II. (I.), 1797-1806-1816. Kreuzer 1812. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Heidelberger Münzhandlung, Herbert Grün 58, Heidelberg 2011, Nr. 2097. (kingdom of Württemberg, Frederick I, 1806-16, kreuzer of 1812. Planchet laminations, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1807-16. One convention thaler was 120 kreuzer. Frederick, who ascended the throne of Württemberg as a duke, was promoted to king by Napoleon in 1806. He did quite well out of Napoleon's reorganization of Germany and found his realm doubled in size. A timely switching of sides allowed him to keep his gains at the Congress of Vienna.
