Wurttemberg 1625 thaler Dav-7864
This specimen was lot 4434 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$4,986 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, Johann Friedrich, 1608-1628. Reichstalerklippe 1625, Christophstal. Ausbeute der Christophstaler Gruben. Von größter Seltenheit. Herrliche Patina, gelocht, kl. Prägeschwäche, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Gerhard Hirsch Nachf. 145, München 1985, Nr. 1854 und Exemplar der Preussag Collection, Part II, Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 2, London 2016, Nr. 1589. (Germany, duchy of Württemberg, John Frederick, 1608-28, klippe thaler of 1625, Christophstal mint, for the Christophstal mine. extremely rare, superb patina, holed, slightly weakly struck, very fine to extremely fine.)
Nach der Rückseitenumschrift dienten diese Stücke vermutlich als (Neujahrs-)Geschenke (Strena) des Herzogs. (According to the inscription on the back, these pieces probably served as New Year's gifts from the duke.)"
This rare type is not priced in the SCWC. This may be the only klippe thaler from this locale. The duke was also an enthusiastic issuer of kipper coinage.
