Künker sale 406, lot 4432

This specimen was lot 4432 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €650 (about US$853 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, Johann Friedrich, 1608-1628. Kreuzer 1624, Christophstal. Von größter Seltenheit. Kl. Prägeschwäche, sehr schön. (duchy of Württemberg, John Frederick, 1608-28, kreuzer of 1624, Christofsthal mint. Extremely rare, a little weakly struck, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1624-25 during the Thirty Years War. This example realized eleven times the catalog value. A kreuzer with a double cross obverse (KM 153) also exists. At this time, ninety kreuzer made a thaler. The duke was also an enthusiastic issuer of kipper coinage.
