Venice (1618-23) ducato Dav-4241
This specimen was lot 37048 in Heritage World Coin Auctions NYINC Signature Sale 3072 (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $552. The lot description[1] noted, "Italy, Venice. Antonio Priuli Ducatone (124 Soldi) ND (1618-23) VF25 NGC. Displays a balanced strike, with uniform steel tone throughout the surfaces. Bold and attractive for the grade." This coin was originally equal to a Dutch silver ducat or a Brabant patagon. It was struck to this module until about 1660, when it was reduced to 23.40 g, 0.826 fine silver, and its place taken by the ducatone. In addition, the SCWC incorrectly calls this Dav-4231, which is an issue of the previous doge. This type was struck without mintmaster's initials and is very rare; the purchaser of this lot obtained a bargain.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 28.10 g, 0.948 fine silver, 43-44 mm diameter.
