Venice (1634-35)-MAM ducato Dav-4250
This specimen was lot 1502 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €220 (about US$321 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, VENISE, Francesco Erizzo (1631-1646), AR ducato con Santa Giustina (124 soldi), s.d. D/ Le Doge agenouillé à g., ten. une bannière, devant le lion de saint Marc deb. à d. R/ Sainte Justine deb. de f., ten. une palme et les Evangiles, la poitrine transpercée par un glaive. Derrière elle, deux galères voguant sur la mer et deux îles. Rare Sigle MAM. Rogné. Beau. (republic of Venice, Francesco Erizzo, 1631-46, undated silver ducat of St. Justina or 124 soldi. Obverse: the doge kneels left, holding a banner before the lion of St. Mark; reverse: St. Justine standing, holding a palm and the Gospels, her breast pierced by a sword; behind her, two galleys sail before two islands. Rare, clipped, Fine.)"
This coin was originally equal to a Dutch silver ducat or a Brabant patagon. It was struck to this module until about 1660, when it was reduced to 23.40 g, 0.826 fine silver, and its place taken by the ducatone. Altho this type is scarce, it is much more available than other ducati of the period (Dav-4231, -4232, -4243, -4245, -4253).
