Venice (1632-33)-DM scudo Dav-4249
This specimen was lot 1808 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €220 (about US$298 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, VENISE, Francesco Erizzo (1631-1646), AR scudo della croce (7 lire), s.d. (1632). Sigle DM (Domenego Michiel). D/ Croix ornée, cantonnée de quatre feuilles. R/ Ecu au lion de saint Marc. Très Beau. (Italy, republic of Venice, Francesco Erizzo, 1631-46, undated silver scudo of the cross, initials DM. Obverse: ornate cross, cantonned with four leaves; reverse: arms with the lion of St. Mark. Very Fine.)"
The SCWC mentions this type with initials VM, LF, DM (shown here), ZD, MAM, AZ, BB, DB, VV, VD, ZL, GC, OZ, AB and ZMB. It had a face value of 140 soldi or seven lira.
Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce despite the many years of production.
Specification: 31.83 g, .948 fine silver, 42-43 mm diameter, this specimen is 31,46 g.
