This specimen is one of a type issued for the province of Utrecht throughout the eighteenth century until 1794. This type was struck 1760-65, 1776, 1780-94 and this is a common date. Similar coins are known for Holland, Overijssel, Gelderland, Zeeland and Westfriesland. The obverse legend hanc tuemur hac nitimur means, "on her we lean, it is she whom we protect." In 1796, the United Provinces collapsed under the pressure of the French Revolution and was replaced by the Batavian Republic, a French client state. The Utrecht mint is still in operation, striking euros.
