This specimen was lot 23419 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. West Friesland. Gulden, 1794. West Friesland Mint. NGC AU-58. A boldly struck and pleasantly toned Gulden with sharp design detail on both sides." This type is recorded for Westfriesland throughout the eighteenth century and was minted in some numbers. This subtype was struck 1762-67, 1778, 1785, 1791-94. The design features the Netherlands virgin with hat of freedom, with spear, leaning on altar with bible. The obverse legend hanc tuemur hac nitimur means, "on her we lean, it is she whom we protect." Similar coins are known for Gelderland, Holland, Overijssel, Utrecht and Zeeland. Utrecht was the most prolific producer. In 1793-94, the United Provinces collapsed under pressure from the French Revolution and was reorganized as the puppet Batavian Republic. Gulden of the old style continued to be minted until at least 1796.
