Uruguay 1917 peso rev 600.jpg

This type was struck 1917 only, most likely at Santiago, Chile. It commemorates José Artigas, who led the forces of independence against Spain and later against Brazil and Argentina. For his efforts, he was rewarded with ostracism, exile and poverty. Uruguayan coinage was sporadic in the nineteenth century and many issues are rare; this one is somewhat scarce. It is the last full size silver peso. There are similar twenty and fifty centésimos (KM 24, KM 22).

Recorded mintage: 2,000,000.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 23.
