This type was struck 1877 and 1893-94, most likely at a European mint. The 1893 issue was struck at Santiago, Chile. Uruguayan coinage was sporadic in the nineteenth century and many issues are rare; this one is somewhat scarce. The 1917 commemorative (KM 22) is the last full size fifty centesimos; the 1943 issue was only 7 grams, .700 fine.
Recorded mintage: 800,000.
Specification: 12.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, .361 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 16.
