The specimen shown was lot 1372 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $592.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Uruguay (struck in Santiago, Chile), 50 centesimos, 1893/73-So, encapsulated NGC MS 64. Choice bold strike and luster, no toning." This type was struck 1877 and 1893-94. The 1893 issue was struck at Santiago, Chile, and all known specimens seem to be the overdate. Uruguayan coinage was sporadic in the nineteenth century and many issues are rare; this one is somewhat scarce. The 1917 commemorative is the last full size fifty centesimos.
