This specimen was lot 1879 in Steve Album sale 16 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2013), where it sold for $283.20. The catalog description[1] noted, "URUGUAY: AR peso, 1893-So, surface hairlines, NGC graded About Unc details, RR." This type was struck 1878 and 1893-95; the issue of 1877 was 25.5 grams. This date was struck at Santiago, Chile. Uruguayan coinage was sporadic in the nineteenth century and many issues are rare. This is the "flat top 3" variety; a "round top 3" also exists and is slightly cheaper. The 1917 commemorative is the last full size peso.
Recorded mintage: 500,000.
Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .751 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM-17a.
