Steve Album sale 55, lot 3158

This specimen was lot 3158 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AR 5 hryven, 2006, Outstanding Personalities of Ukraine – 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Ivan Franko, struck at the Ukrainian mint, Kyiv, with COA of issue, Proof." This denomination was used for numerous commemoratives in 2006, including KM 387, KM 388, KM 389, KM 390, KM 402, KM 405, KM 407, KM 409, KM 411, KM 413, KM 415, KM 416, KM 417, KM 418 (shown here), KM 420 and KM 422. They were struck in various metals, including sterling silver, copper-nickel-zinc and bimetallic. The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovantsiv). Its sign is "₴". At present (June 2026), US$1 = 45.07 hryven. Wikipedia comments, "Ivan Yakovych Franko PhD (Ukrainian: Іван Якович Франко; 1856-1916) was a Ukrainian poet, writer, ...and the author of the first detective novels and modern poetry in Ukrainian."
