Steve Album sale 55, lot 3159

This specimen was lot 3159 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AR 10 hryven, 2006, Hetman Capital Cities Series - Chyhyryn, struck at the Ukrainian mint, Kyiv, with COA of issue, Proof." Chyhyryn is now a small town of extreme obscurity. Between 1984 and 1989, a nuclear power plant was under construction there but it was never completed or commissioned. This denomination was used for numerous commemoratives in 2006, including KM 392, KM 410, KM 421, KM 423, KM 424 (shown here), KM 425 and KM 427, all struck in sterling silver. The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovantsiv). Its sign is "₴". At present (June 2026), US$1 = 45.07 hryven.
