Steve Album sale 55, lot 3140

This specimen was lot 3140 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "UKRAINE: Republic, AR 10 hryven, 2004, Heroes of Cossack Age Series – Pereyaslav Cossack Council, struck at the Ukrainian mint, Kyiv, with COA of issue, Proof." This denomination was used for numerous commemoratives in 2004, including KM 206, KM 207, KM 223, KM 224, KM 225, KM 339, KM 340, KM 342 and KM 343 (shown here), all struck to the same module. The hryvnia was introduced in 1996 to supersede the karbovanets (1 hryvnia = 100,000 karbovantsiv). Its sign is "₴". At present (June 2026), US$1 = 45.07 hryven. Starting with KM 225, the purity was raised to 0.999 while the weight was reduced to 33.62 g. The Pereiaslav Agreement of 1654 was a treaty whereby Cossack hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky secured the military protection of the Tsardom of Russia in exchange for allegiance to the tsar.
