Stephen Album sale 37, lot 2341
SA37-2341r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2341 in Stephen Album sale 37 (Santa Rosa, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $113.05. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, AR 5 kuruş, Kostantiniye, AH1223 year 5, bold strike, lovely EF to AU." Turkish issues before the reform of 1839 are a mess of constantly changing denominations as the government attempted to debase its way out of perpetual bankruptcy. This type was struck during years 3-11 of Mahmud's reign. It is not listed as expensive but is very difficult to find nice; this example is typical in being weakly struck.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 24-26 g, 0.730 fine silver, this specimen 25.58 g.

Catalog reference: KM-564, UBK-67.
