Steve Album sale 55, lot 1963

This specimen was lot 1963 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, AR 5 piastres, Kostantiniye, AH1223 year 4, third monetary standard; bold strike, struck with an unusually worn obverse die, XF, ex Kenneth A. Bovenkamp Collection." This type was struck years 3 thru 11. Debasement was continuous throughout the sultan's reign and coinage types were usually shortlived. Forty para equalled a kuruş.
