Jean Elsen sale 136, lot 899

This specimen was lot 899 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,908 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AV souverain (lion d'or), 1649. D/ Lion deb. à g., couronné, brandissant une épée, la patte posée sur un globe placé sur un socle. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Frappé sur flan large, avec un coin de revers légèrement corrodé. Superbe. Provient de notre liste 253, juillet-septembre 2010, 738. (lordship of Tournai, Philip IV, 1621-65, gold souverain or lion of 1649. Obverse: crowned lion rampant to left, brandishing a sword, with an orb in the other paw. Obverse: crowmed arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Struck on a large flan with the reverse die lightly corroded, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck intermittently 1633-65 and is fairly common. Similar types were made in Flanders (Fr-227) and Brabant (Fr-107 & -108).
