This specimen was lot 5312 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 50 CHF (about US$67 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND, 1 Rappen 1939 B, Bern. Seltener Jahrgang (Rare date). NGC MS61 BN." This type was struck 1902-41 and superseded a one rappen that was slightly heavier (KM 3.1). Despite the paltry reported mintage, the 1939 is only scarce, not rare. Zinc rappen were minted during World War Two and when bronze rappen resumed in 1948, a modified design was introduced.
Recorded mintage: 10,000, a scarce date.
Specification: 1.5 g, bronze, 16 mm diameter.
