Spain 1807-M FA real
This specimen was lot 1537 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 120 € (about US$155 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1807. Carlos IV. Madrid. FA. 1 real. Attractive. Ex Aureo y Calicó 03/07/2013, no. 1445. EBC- [about extremely fine]." It is one of a series minted in Spain 1788-1808 for Charles IV. The type is listed quite low in the SCWC but is seldom seen. They were debased in an attempt to keep them inside Spain. Assayer AI is also listed for 1807. The tense political situation exploded in 1808 with the French invasion, the abdication of Charles IV, the imprisonment of Ferdinand VII and the installation of Joseph Napoleon on the throne.
