This specimen was lot 674 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 145 € (about US$219 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,
"1807. Carlos IV. Lima. JP. 1 real. Pátina. Parte de brillo original. Bella. Rara así. EBC/EBC+. (One real of 1807, Lima mint. Toned, part of original luster, rare thus, extremely fine.)"
This specimen is one of a series struck 1791-1808 at Lima, Peru, during the reign of Charles IV (1788-1808). Assayer JP is listed for 1803-21. The years 1791-93 saw the use of a local bust slightly larger than the standard bust of later years. As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted the abundance of Charles IV one reales as follows: Mexico City, Potosi, Santiago (all common), Lima, Guatemala (somewhat scarce), Bogotá (rare).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
