This specimen was lot 3759 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. 8 Escudos, 1807-JP (Lima). Charles IV. NGC graded About Uncirculated, Details (Saltwater Damage)." This coin was minted 1792-1808 and is the most common Peruvian colonial eight escudos. Sea water corrodes copper and silver coins quite quickly but gold is not affected. The damage visible on this specimen is not corrosion but abrasion from sand.
