This specimen was lot 12380 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $3,290. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1807-TH. PCGS MS-62. Charles IV (1788-1808). Lustrous." This type with the bust of Charles IV was struck 1791-1808. If any Mexican colonial gold coin can be called common, this is it.

Occasionally counterfeits made of platinum turn up of this type. These were likely made in the mid-nineteenth century, when the price of platinum was below the price of gold and making such a fake could be profitable.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14610, Fr-43; KM-159.
