Peru 1807-L JP 4 escudos
This specimen was lot 75722 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,708. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Escudos, 1807-LIMAE JP. Lima Mint. Charles IV. PCGS VF-30. An alluring piece that presents bright yellow central devices and rich, amber toning in the peripheries. Though the obverse shows some central strike weakness, the reverse offers great detailing and preservation. From the Richard August Collection. Ex: Winter Collection (Stack's - 1/1974) Lot # 181." This type was struck 1791-1801, 1804-07 for king Charles IV. He succeeded Charles III in 1788, but as there were delays in getting punches for the new bust out to the Latin American mints, the old hubs were used with the new king's name thru 1791. Assayer JP is recorded for 1803-23.
