Sedwick 39-1353r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1353 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $5,100. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Madrid, gold bust 4 escudos, Charles IV, 1801/791 FA, PCGS MS62. Choice luster, full rims and sharp details but with adjustment marks in centers on both sides, second finest in PCGS census behind a single MS63+." It is one of a series minted at Madrid 1788-1803 for Charles IV. The type is not cheap but quite a bit more available than the very rare eight escudos. Assayer FA (1800-08) shared the 1801 production with assayer MF (1788-1802), which is rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14393, Cal-1480; KM-436.1; Fr-294.
