The first specimen was lot 1979 in Goldberg sale 81 (Los Angeles, September 2014), where it sold for $1,028.12. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain. 2 Escudos, 1800/780 MF (Madrid). Charles IV. Interesting overdate, holder indicates 800 over 780, appears to be 800 over 790. Choice example with original mint luster. NGC graded MS-63." This specimen was lot 3800 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it sold for $423. The catalog description[2] noted, "Spain. 2 Escudos, 1800/790-MF (Madrid). Charles IV. Overdate unlisted in KM. NGC graded AU-55." This type was struck in Madrid and Seville 1788-1808 for Charles IV. This date is common. Unlike the Latin American mints, which concentrated on producing eight escudos, the Spanish mints turned most of their gold into two escudos.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14237 (overdate), Fr-296; KM-435.1.
